Learn to Drive in an Automatic Car at RijVrij Driving School
At RijVrij driving school in Haarlem, you can choose whether you want to learn to drive in a manual or automatic car. Recently, we have started offering lessons in an automatic Hyundai Kona (100% electric)!
Learning to drive in an automatic car has the biggest advantage of being easier and therefore much faster! You don’t have to learn to shift gears, which saves you an average of 10-12 lessons!
Driving an automatic car is the future. Nearly 30% of all cars in the Netherlands (as of 2023) are automatic, and this share is growing rapidly. Electric and hybrid cars always have automatic transmission. Of the new cars sold in 2023, 2/3 were electric or hybrid, and many petrol cars nowadays also come with automatic transmission.
Currently in the Netherlands, if you obtain your driver’s license in an automatic car, you are not allowed to drive a manual car. This is indicated on your license with code 78. If you want to drive a manual car, you’ll also need to take the exam for that.

FAQ
How many lessons do I need?
This varies greatly from person to person. On average, 30-40 lessons in a manual car and 20-30 if you’re learning in an automatic.
How old do I have to be to take driving lessons?
You must be at least 16.5 years old. You will then follow the 2todrive program. This means you can start lessons at 16.5 and take the practical exam at 17. You will drive until you’re 18 with a supervisor.
Will I always be picked up and dropped off at home?
Yes, you will be picked up and dropped off at home. Unless you live outside the region where RijVrij operates, in which case we can arrange to meet at a different location.
Will I always have the same instructor?
Yes!
Will I always drive the same car?
Yes!
I haven’t passed my theoretical exam yet; can I still take driving lessons?
Yes, you can. It is advisable to start as soon as possible because knowledge of traffic rules also helps with practical driving.
What can I expect with a trial lesson?
During a trial lesson, we get to know each other, explain the basics of driving, and start driving in a calm area. Based on this lesson, the instructor can estimate how many lessons you will need.
